SUGINOYA

Masterpiece Collection from a 150-Year-Old Local Brewery

Unparalleled Flavors thanks to Proven Craftsmanship

In the Edo period, Suginoya served as “Oshoya,” the head of those overseeing the territory of Itoshima (from present-day Imajuku to Nijō). Sake brewed from surplus Nengu-rice (rice paid as a form of tax during the Edo period) was the ultimate hospitality, immensely pleasing visitors.

Hamachi-shuzo, founded in the third year of the Meiji period (1870), is a sake brewery in Hakata with a history spanning 150 years.

Shinkuro Hamachi, the founder of Hamachi-shuzo, was an ardent lover of the performing arts. Once profoundly moved by a Noh performance at Fukuoka Castle, he built the Noh stage using cedar trees he collected from the mountain behind the brewery. Typically, Noh stages are made from cypress, and Shinkuro dedicated himself to building one of his own.

This is how “Suginoya” got its name, meaning “the house (ya) with a cedar (sugi) Noh stage”.

Our founder’s playful spirit and dedicated heart are inherited by our craftsmen to this day, as they carefully inspect each grain of rice and brew with heart and soul.

“Suginoya,” representing Hamachi-shuzo, has won numerous awards at the Annual Japan Sake Awards and is renowned as a prestigious Hakata brewery.

Please enjoy our sake, brewed with an unwavering passion for sake-making that has remained unchanged since our founding.
